Is Broadway... [Dec. 8th, 2007|07:33 pm]
...so devoid of talent that it must steal all of it's ideas from Hollywood now? Are Broadway audiences so devoid of brains that all they ask of a show is that it give them nostalgia about a summer movie from a decade ago?

..In July of 2006, JMS' website reported that "Sam Raimi's production company is currently developing Rising Stars as a series."

Rising Stars and Heroes [Dec. 6th, 2007|01:33 pm]
Heroes is not being written well. This upsets me because Jeph Loeb is the man, and really all the episodes that have decent dialogue are to his credit written by him, be he seems stuck with a bunch of other writers who demand mediocrity and stringing an audience base along. We watch because we keep hoping that they will take the world they have built and rise above the content that have delivered. We also keep watching because with the exception of the greatly depraved Smallville there is nothing else for our particular audience base on TV.

So here is an idea. get my man Joe Michael Straczynski and create a Rising Stars Tv show. The thinga bout Heroes is we watch it but it is certainly not immune to competition. Take said Rising Stars show place it in the exact same time slot and watch Heroes fall to the deadly clutch of Poet's hand. Heroes is as close of a rip off to Rising Stars that I fear Rising Stars may lose credibility just through association.
"Yeah Rising Stars it was this comic book like Heroes..."
"...Ugh Heroes, I watched that for a little bit but that show sucked, why would I read such a comic."

JMS who is also the President of a certain writers guild (let this be a lesson, even writers of bad sci-fi like Babylon 5 and He-Man can one day be respected) that happens to be striking at the moment (WAY TO GO! STICK IT TO THE MAN!), needs to stand up and defend his work (but only after he gets paid more for it) and get great ratings in the process. This will have the added benefit of forcing Heroes into failure so that maybe NBC will ask Aaron Sorkin to write something new for them. One can wish.

All I'm saying her is Peter Petrelli is no Poet.

MICROSOFT!!! [Dec. 6th, 2007|12:29 pm]
The new 360 update looks on the surface to be an excellent addition. Only on the surface though, because while I used to be able to access my computer through the network on my 360, that ability as been stripped from the new 360 interface so that now you can only access computers with Windows Media Center. Since only Vista or a select version of XP includes the Media Center software, all of the media hub power of my 360 has now been stripped from me. Why would you remove... REMOVE features. Why indeed. MAYBE to force me to buy Vista? COULD IT BE!? MICROSOFT!!!

It's not too late for me to trade in ALL of my 360 stuff and buy a PS3!

Whoa Baby [Nov. 29th, 2007|12:40 pm]
My cousin is in the hospital and might have her baby today. Today is also my sister's birthday. If it happens it would mark the second, arguably third coincidental birthday in my family. My mom, her sister (my aunt) and her son (my cousin) were all born on March 2nd.

Strange Days Indeed.

Where am I [Nov. 26th, 2007|10:51 pm]
I always seem to get this far. I'm right on the edge of it, on the edge of one step forward or another tumble back. It is in these moments, the moments I lack clarity, when right and wrong are less defined, that I divorce myself from humanity, crawl back into the recesses of my journals and jobs and fail as publicly as possible so that I may be condemned by others to not return.

This week has drained me, one blast of doubt followed by an injection of distraction and finished off with a more direct failure. Shadows of the past, how much easier they were to handle when they were symbolized by women, but the reality is they were never the shadows, it was me, always me. The dark horrid sinful nature of Patrick out to tear me down at all costs. I am divided against myself, and no breakup or relocation can enable my escape.

No peace... my time of rest is at an end, now I must confront myself, as I have a dozen times before, nearing thirty years of age I am farther behind and weaker of will then ever before. It may be Christ's will that I shall fall until my very identity is shattered and no trace of hubris remains behind, yet still I cling to what traces of human dignity I have left.

I am lies, I am betrayal, I am sin, Jesus save me, for I can go no farther.

I have walked in emptiness and become empty.
I have become enslaved to weak and worthless elemental things.

"Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me;
My heart is appalled within me.
I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all Your doings;
I muse on the work of Your hands.
I stretch out my hands to You;
My soul longs for you, as a parched land.
Answer me quickly,
O Lord, my spirit fails;
Do not hide your face from me,
Or I will become like those who go down to the pit."

Call of Duty 4, Assasins Creed & Mass Effect [Nov. 25th, 2007|11:57 am]
Video Games went through a fundamental uptick this month. With the release of these 3 games along with earlier Bioshock and arguably Halo 3, Video Games were changed (again) for what is considered a standard of expectations. Needless to say I've been talking with plenty of depressed game developers this week who are all delaying their projects because suddenly their games are no longer up to par. Bioshock, Halo 3, COD4 and Mass Effect got perfect 10's pretty much across the board, Assasins Creed got near perfect marks and most agree though it lacks polish it does things no video game has ever done before. The thing about Perfect 10 games this year is they will now be considered average 7-score games next year, making anything thats not as good as them down in the 5-mark area so now game developers in droves have had to delay their projects. That's what we call progress.

Mass Effect in particular both has my interest and has taken up the most of my time. This is clearly Biowares masterpiece. Everything from Baldur's Gate to KOTOR to Jade Empire was basically just practice, working out the kinks so they could make Mass Effect. i swear it would not surprise me if they had been working on this game in theory from the day they came together as developers and every other game was a prototype for one aspect of Mass Effect. Mass Effect is gorgeous, its combat is genius, and it's friendly AI is horrendous. My unit is retarded, someone needed to steal the AI system from Rainbow Six Vegas when Ubisoft was not looking. Kingdom Hearts had smarter friendly AI. None of that matters though. Mass Effect could be a completely combatless game, it could be as me and Matthew often talk about a completely Diceless RPG which is by far a first for any videogame in history and it would still be one of the best games ever made. Because it's the first game EVER with real, true, acting. I have never felt so much like I was the main character in a movie with tough moral decisions that are in no way grounded in the simplicity of good or evil, or even right vs. wrong. Some decisions I've had to make I've literally sat staring at the screen for 15 minutes trying to decide what I should do. But it's the acting that really matters. I don't think I've ever consider that in the future we will judge video games based on the performance given by their actors. We all swoon when some big name actor does a cameo in a video games, but Mass Effect foretells a richer future for video games, one where a near perfect technical game will get low marks because it had no emotion behind it, and the acting sucked. So connected am I with my characters acting that when on trailers when I see another face speaking with my characters voice, it kinda pisses me off. ;> Mass Effect is also the beginning of the best Sci-Fi franchise this century, Star Wars and Star Trek have nothing on this universe, but instead Mass Effect takes what we love about those two franchises and bring them in line with modern thinking, maybe how a Star Trek the Next NEXT Generation would look like if it were made. Even if you don't play Video Games but Sci-Fi marks a piece of who you are, you need to play this game, otherwise you'll be out of the loop for some time to come.

A more personal post will come later.

New Constantine [Nov. 14th, 2007|02:13 pm]
So some Jehovah's Witnesses hung out with me today. You know I used to really write these people off, but instead today I just felt a lot of pain for them to be so blindly following a set of beliefs that... to be honest is pretty paper thin. Anyways the funny part is somehow without any sort of deception or guile they agreed that they would like to engage the world's governments in a massive coup d'état. The absurdity of what they were telling me seemed to be oblivious to them (hey all I was trying to make the point was that we should engage our current government, somehow they decided that was a better idea and instead we should take over). Using their singular Bible translation I couldn't help but think of the middle age church that read expressly from the latin vulgate and drew a variety of false beliefs just due to bad translation. Not that I know greek or anything but I can at least cross reference a few translations and even check a concordance to see if a coup is a good idea or not. Anyways I don't mean to make light, because really the whole time I had this horrible sinking feeling in my stomach, a compassion for them, so close, yet so far.
